Only 22 days to go …

Nominations for the Dudley CVS 2014 Volunteer Awards are now being sought. The deadline for nominations is August 22nd….just 22 days from today (Thursday 31st July)

An interesting fact about the number 22…..the length of a cricket pitch is 22 yards from wicket to wicket. 22 yards is also a standard unit of length, known as a Chain and used by land surveyors. There are 80 chains in a mile. Chains were used when railway lines were first laid in Britain and evidence of this can still be seen on some railway bridges. The photo below indicates 112.63 meaning the bridge is located 112miles and 63 chains from a known starting point.

Who’s your Inspiration? #throwbackthursday #dva14

As we get nearer to the deadline for nominations for this year’s Dudley Volunteer Awards, I thought I would share some of the amazing artwork from last year’s awards to inspire you.  Meet last year’s poster stars – each one of them an outstanding volunteer! I am sure you know an outstanding volunteer or team or volunteers, helping out in Dudley borough.

Why not NOMINATE NOW!

Do you know a business with heart? #dva14

  • Do you know a business who has gone the extra mile to make a real difference in local communities?

  • Has your not-for-profit group had support from a local business e.g. financial, giving staff time to support events, collecting donations etc.?

Lots of amazing businesses support us each year with our annual Operation Santa Appeal and also approach us, asking us to link them up with local charities so they and their staff can make a contribution to local communities.

However, there must be loads of other businesses with heart out there in Dudley borough and we want to know about the ones you’ve met, or heard about.  Please tell us about them now and nominate them for the Business supporting the Community category of our Dudley Volunteer Awards 2014.

Last year the inaugural Award, which was sponsored by the Copthorne Hotel, went to Brett Harris from Blaze Hair in Kingswinford. His nominator said:

“Brett’s ambition is to help gather enough donations to reach the approximately 15,000 disadvantaged children and young people across the borough. This is a cause close to his heart and last year he collected over 1000 of the 4000 toys collected for the Operation Santa Appeal. Brett is an inspiration!”

An interesting fact about the number 26…..the distance of the modern ‘Marathon’ race is 26 miles and 385 yards. Legend has it that a Greek messenger, named Pheidippides, ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persian army had been miraculously defeated at Marathon. “Nenikekamen” (we have won) he said before collapsing of exhaustion. The literal translation of the word Marathon is “a place full of fennels.”

An interesting fact about the number 28…..There are 28 ‘tiles’ in a standard set of dominoes.  The game is first mentioned in Chinese writings around 900 years ago and appeared in Italy during the 18th Century. One theory about the name dominoes is the apparent resemblance of tiles to a kind of mask worn in Venice. Domino’s Pizza is the largest pizza chain in the world with over 10,000 outlets in around 70 countries.
