Sporting Champion Award

There are many volunteers and coaches in community sports clubs across the borough playing a vital role and without their passion, time, energy and commitment, many clubs, team sport sessions and coaching sessions would not be able to run.

In short, volunteers and coaches make sport happen.  Without this dedicated group of people, who willingly give their time to enable others to play the sport they love, grassroots sport wouldn’t exist.

John Polychronakis, Chief Executive of Dudley MBC was delighted to personally sponsor and also read the citation for this Award.

John Cheadle (2)Main Award: John Cheadle

His nominator said:

“John has tutored many young people at Bromley Pensnett Table Tennis Club for over 45+ years and despite being in his 80’s, he still likes to grab a bat and get stuck in.  The table tennis club has always been a positive influence for people living in the Pensnett and Bromley area, as it provides one of the few structured activities for people of all ages. As John himself would say, table tennis provides great exercise for both the body and mind, but more importantly, it brings local people together.”

John Cheadle (2)Highly Commended Award: Dave Powell

His nominator said:

“Dave volunteers for four local sports groups. He has considerable input into the development of all the groups he supports, from raising funds, to the building of a new pavilion and towards the growth of various Saturday and Sunday league teams, including junior teams.  He has never let his disability get in the way of any of his activities.  Dave is an inspiration to everyone. His advice to those who are challenged is never give up, there is always a way round most problems.”

Dave is quite clearly a committed and inspirational volunteer.
